At approx 17:10 hrs, Southwest Fire and Rescue Department was dispatched to structure fire in Martel. SW 11, SW31, SW 32, SW 33, 41, SW 42, SW 43, and SW 61 cleared with 24 Members. SW 32 was first on location to find a large fully involved fire in downtown Martell. Mutual aid was started from Crete, Cortland, Firth, Hallam, Hickman, and Southeast. Southwest crews stared fire attack, with SW 31 crew setting up a water shuttle south of the incident. After going in to a full defensive mode due to the progression of the fire, Crete arrived with their aerial and set up in front of the building to help protect the exposures surrounding the buildings. Mutual aid departments were returned to service after the fire was under control. Southwest units remained on location until the following morning, to manage hot-spots and prevent onlookers from getting into dangerous locations from until a safety fence could be put up. The fire cause was deemed as not determined.
